Product Overview
Biochemazone Simulated Pooled Human Urine BZ404 is a sterile, ready-to-use artificial urine at pH 6.0 that stands in for pooled human urine. It is formulated from water and a precise blend of the major constituents of urine – urea, creatinine, uric acid and electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and chloride – balanced to resemble the average composition of urine from healthy individuals. It is colourless to slightly yellow with a colour dye, and odourless to slightly odorous.
Pooled urine is used as a blank matrix because it averages out the differences between donors; a simulated pool gives the same average in every batch, without collection, screening or biosafety handling. BZ404 is used in medical education and training, in research on urinary tract conditions and biomarkers, by manufacturers of medical devices and diagnostic tests for quality control, and in forensic and toxicology laboratories for controlled experiments and validation studies.
It is supplied stabilized, with 0.05% preservative, and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. The pH can be set in the range 6.0 to 6.5 or customized further, and additives can be included to simulate blood, protein or glucose in the urine. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only. For a drug-free toxicology matrix see Drug-Free Synthetic Urine Matrix BZ571; for the single-donor equivalent see Artificial Human Urine BZ340.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why use a simulated pool in place of pooled human urine?
A real pool has to be collected, screened and handled as a biological sample, and no two pools are the same. A simulated pool has the average composition in every batch and can be shipped and stored as a laboratory reagent.
How long does the solution keep?
Unopened, the stabilized solution has a 1-year shelf life at 2–30 °C. A preservative-free version with a 6-month shelf life and a dried Powder Version Kit with a 2-year shelf life are available on request.
