Biochemazone Dental Surgical Artificial Test Soil BZ481 is a simulated-use test soil for cleaning validation and verification studies on devices used in dentistry, in line with ASTM F3208-20. It is a precisely formulated, reproducible mixture of blood proteins, artificial saliva, mucus and bone particulates that closely replicates the biological contaminants found on instruments after dental surgical procedures. The soil is red-brown, like the clinical contamination it stands for.
BZ481 is used to validate the cleaning of reusable dental instruments and equipment – scalers, mirrors, handpieces and ultrasonic tips – to test and compare cleaning agents, detergents and automated reprocessing systems, and in the development of cleaning technologies for the dental industry. It gives a realistic and repeatable challenge, and it is non-hazardous.
BZ481 can be ordered as Dried Powder or as a Premixed Ready to Use Formulation – the powder in 5 g, 10 g, 20 g and 50 g packs for making 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL, and the premixed formulation in 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL packs. The dried powder has a 2-year shelf life and can be reconstituted easily. Unopened, it has a 2-year shelf life at 2–30 °C and is shipped at room temperature. Two Versions to Select
- Dried Powder: Dry mixture supplied with a clear salt solution, in which it is reconstituted before the test.
- Premixed Ready to Use Formulation: Supplied mixed and ready to apply, with no weighing or mixing.
Select the version first and then the pack size. The Dried Powder has a 2-year shelf life and can be reconstituted easily: 5 grams is for making 50 mL, 10 grams is for making 100 mL, 20 grams is for making 200 mL and 50 grams is for making 500 mL. The Premixed Ready to Use Formulation is supplied in 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL packs.

How to Use

What makes BZ481 a dental soil?
It combines the contaminants of dental surgery in one soil: blood proteins, artificial saliva, mucus and bone particulates. A general surgical soil does not contain the saliva and mucin that coat dental instruments.
How does BZ481 differ from BZ482?
Saliva Artificial Test Soil (BZ482) simulates saliva contamination on oral devices such as mouthguards, trays and retainers. BZ481 adds bone particulates and is meant for surgical dental instruments.
