Product Overview
Biochemazone Formulation for Fecal Test Soil BZ488 is a synthetic soil that simulates human faecal material, for the cleaning validation of medical devices, surgical instruments and equipment used in gastrointestinal and related procedures, in line with ASTM F3208-20. It is made from lard, peanut butter, butter, flour, evaporated milk, egg yolk, ink, saline and dehydrated blood, which together reproduce the lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, pigments and water of faecal matter.
Faecal soil is greasy, sticky and coloured, and it is one of the hardest residues to remove. BZ488 is applied to the device as a paste, left to dry so that it bonds to the surface, and put through the washer-disinfector; the colour and texture of the soil show where it has not been removed. It is used to validate washer-disinfectors and cleaning protocols in healthcare, dental, veterinary and laboratory settings, to test reusable devices used in gastrointestinal procedures, and in the development of cleaning products and equipment.
BZ488 can be ordered as Dried Powder or as a Premixed Ready to Use Formulation – the powder in 5 g, 10 g, 20 g and 50 g packs for making 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL, and the premixed formulation in 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL packs. The dried powder has a 2-year shelf life and can be reconstituted easily. Unopened, it has a 2-year shelf life at 2–30 °C and is shipped at room temperature. For a worst-case mucus soil for endoscopes see Simulated Mucus Test Soil (BZ483); for the general surgical soil see Artificial Test Soil ASTM F3208-20 (BZ477).
Two Versions to Select
- Dried Powder: Dried powder kit that is mixed before the test to a thick paste.
- Premixed Ready to Use Formulation: Supplied pre-mixed and ready to apply, with no further preparation.
Select the version first and then the pack size. The Dried Powder has a 2-year shelf life and can be reconstituted easily: 5 grams is for making 50 mL, 10 grams is for making 100 mL, 20 grams is for making 200 mL and 50 grams is for making 500 mL. The Premixed Ready to Use Formulation is supplied in 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL packs.
Ingredients
- Lard – the lipid content of faecal material
- Peanut butter and butter – texture and fat
- Flour and egg yolk – carbohydrates and proteins
- Evaporated milk – water-soluble components and proteins
- Ink – pigment, for colour and visual detection
- Saline – consistency and the salt content of body fluids
- Dehydrated blood – blood residues that may be present in clinical procedures
How to Use
- Prepare the soil: mix the Dried Powder kit to a thick paste, or use the Premixed Ready to Use Formulation as supplied.
- Apply: spread the paste evenly on the devices or instruments to be tested.
- Dry: allow the paste to dry so that it bonds to the surface.
- Clean: place the soiled devices in the washer-disinfector and run the cycle according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Inspect: check the devices for remaining soil; its colour and texture make residues easy to detect.
Handling note: The soil contains peanut, milk, egg and wheat ingredients and dehydrated blood. It is a laboratory test material and is not for consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the two versions?
The Premixed Ready to Use Formulation is supplied pre-mixed and is ready for immediate use. The Dried Powder is a kit that you mix to a paste before the test.
Why is faecal soil a hard test for a washer?
It combines fats, proteins, carbohydrates and pigment in a sticky paste that dries onto surfaces. A cycle that removes it has been tested against one of the most stubborn residues a device meets.
Does the soil contain allergens?
Yes – it contains peanut, milk, egg and wheat ingredients. Handle it as a laboratory test material.
How should it be stored, and how long does it keep?
Store it at 2–30 °C in the tightly closed container, protected from light. It is shipped at room temperature, and unopened both versions have a 2-year shelf life. Because the soil contains proteins, the premixed version is best kept at 2–8 °C if it will be stored for a long time. Once the powder is reconstituted or the premixed soil is opened, refrigerate it and use it promptly.
