Product Overview

Biochemazone Artificial Synthetic Test Soil BZ489 is formulated to demonstrate the cleaning efficacy of washer-disinfectors and their accessories used for reusable medical devices, in line with ISO/TS 15883-5. It is a synthetic blend that simulates the proteins, lipids and body fluids which build up on medical, dental, laboratory, pharmaceutical and veterinary equipment. It is non-toxic, free from blood products and bright red, so that soil left after the cycle is easy to see.

The soil is applied to instruments or test carriers as a paste, left to dry for about 30 minutes and put through the normal cycle; red residue afterwards shows where cleaning was incomplete. BZ489 is used for cleaning efficacy validation, for routine and quarterly checks, for testing after maintenance, and for finding the weak points of a washer-disinfector that needs adjustment.

BZ489 can be ordered as Dried Powder or as a Premixed Ready to Use Formulation – the powder in 5 g, 10 g, 20 g and 50 g packs for making 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL, and the premixed formulation in 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL packs. The dried powder has a 2-year shelf life and can be reconstituted easily. Unopened, it has a 2-year shelf life at 2–30 °C and is shipped at room temperature. For the soil that is spread in the chamber see Washer Disinfector Soil Test (BZ487); for a soil with protein, hemoglobin and carbohydrate markers see Artificial Test Soil ASTM F3208-20 (BZ477).

Two Versions to Select

  • Dried Powder: Soil powder that is mixed with water and red indicator ink to a uniform paste before the test; the ink is bought separately.
  • Premixed Ready to Use Formulation: Supplied mixed and ready to apply, with no weighing or mixing.

Select the version first and then the pack size. The Dried Powder has a 2-year shelf life and can be reconstituted easily: 5 grams is for making 50 mL, 10 grams is for making 100 mL, 20 grams is for making 200 mL and 50 grams is for making 500 mL. The Premixed Ready to Use Formulation is supplied in 50 mL, 100 mL, 200 mL and 500 mL packs.

How to Use

  1. Prepare the soil paste: mix the Dried Powder with water and red indicator ink, or use the Premixed Ready to Use Formulation as supplied.
  2. Apply: spread the paste on the instrument surfaces or test carriers, covering every area to be tested.
  3. Dry: leave the soil to dry for about 30 minutes, so that it bonds to the surface.
  4. Run the cycle: load the items and start the standard cleaning cycle.
  5. Inspect: check the items for red residue, which marks incomplete cleaning.
