Biochemazone Artificial Cerebral Interstitial Fluid BZ418, also called artificial brain interstitial fluid or artificial CIF, is a ready-to-use synthetic solution designed to mimic the properties of natural cerebral interstitial fluid, at pH 7.4. It contains water, electrolytes, proteins and other relevant biomolecules, which replicate the physical and chemical properties of the natural material. The pH of natural cerebral interstitial fluid is about 7.3 to 7.4; the standard formulation is set at 7.4. Its viscosity and density are matched to the natural material, and it stays stable through the test.
Research laboratories use it to study the interaction between the interstitial fluid and the brain environment, including neuronal activity, metabolic processes and general brain health, and in tests that measure biomarkers in the brain’s extracellular space. It is also used to test and calibrate medical devices that interact with cerebral interstitial fluid, such as diagnostic tools and laboratory equipment, in the development of new neurological technologies and procedures, and in training, where it takes the place of real cerebral interstitial fluid.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The formulation, minerals, organic content and pH can be customized.
