Product Overview
Biochemazone Simulated Interstitial Fluid BZ254, also called artificial interstitial fluid or tissue fluid, is a sterile, ready-to-use solution that simulates the composition and pH of interstitial fluid. It is supplied at pH 7.4, and the stabilizer, pH and composition can be adjusted to the project requirement.
Interstitial fluid is the thin layer of fluid that surrounds the body’s cells. It comes from substances that leak out of the blood capillaries, brings oxygen and nutrients to the cells and removes their waste products, and drains towards the lymph vessels, where it is called lymph. It contains glucose, salt, fatty acids and minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium, and it makes up almost 40% of the water in the body. Interstitial fluid has become important in diabetes monitoring: a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) reads the glucose level in the interstitial fluid through a small sensor placed just under the skin. BZ254 gives laboratories an interstitial fluid of constant composition for in vitro research, in place of a fluid that is very difficult to collect.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. The formulation, minerals, organic content and pH can be customized. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only; it is not for clinical diagnosis or treatment. For glucose levels see Interstitial Fluid Glucose Panel BZ582; for skin see Artificial Interstitial Dermal Fluid (BZ428); for the subcutaneous tissue see Simulated Subcutaneous Interstitial Fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is interstitial fluid used in glucose monitoring?
A continuous glucose monitor measures glucose in the interstitial fluid under the skin, not in blood. Glucose in interstitial fluid follows blood glucose with a delay of around 10 minutes, so the monitor applies a formula to estimate the blood value.
How long does the solution keep?
Unopened, the stabilized solution has a 1-year shelf life at 2–30 °C. A preservative-free version with a 6-month shelf life and a dried Powder Version Kit with a 2-year shelf life are available on request.
