Biochemazone Borate Buffered Saline (BBS), pH 8.0 BZ224 is a ready-to-use, isotonic borate buffer with sodium chloride, based on 10 mM borate. It gives a mildly alkaline, phosphate-free and amine-free environment for diluting proteins and for coating and conjugation work.

Borate buffers cover roughly pH 8–10. Because BBS contains no primary amines (unlike Tris), it does not compete in amine-reactive coupling, which makes it a common choice for antibody–particle conjugation, coating plates and beads, and as an immunoassay diluent. Tween 20, BSA or milk can be added to make wash or blocking buffers.

What is borate buffered saline used for?

BBS is used to dilute proteins and as a coating and conjugation buffer – for example, coupling antibodies to latex, gold or magnetic particles and coating plates or beads.

Why choose borate instead of Tris?

Tris has a primary amine that competes in amine-reactive coupling. Borate has none, so it does not interfere.

Does borate interact with sugars?

Yes. Borate binds cis-diols in sugars and some glycoproteins, and can inhibit certain enzymes. Choose another buffer if this matters in your method.

Can I make a wash or blocking buffer from it?

Yes. Add 0.05% Tween 20 for washing, or BSA or milk for blocking.

How should borate buffered saline be stored?
