Product Overview

Biochemazone 0.1 M MES Buffer, pH 5.5 BZ229 is a ready-to-use solution of MES (2-(N-morpholino)ethanesulfonic acid), one of the original Good’s buffers, titrated to pH 5.5 with sodium hydroxide.

MES has a pKa of about 6.1 at 25 °C and buffers well from pH 5.5 to 6.7. It contains no primary amines, phosphate or carboxylates and binds metal ions very weakly. That makes it the buffer of choice for EDC/NHS (carbodiimide) coupling of proteins, antibodies and peptides to beads, nanoparticles and surfaces, and a clean buffer for cation-exchange chromatography and slightly acidic enzyme work.

Each batch is prepared with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system.

Frequently asked questions

Why is MES used for EDC/NHS coupling?

EDC works best at pH 4.5–6.0, and MES buffers in that range without amines or carboxyl groups that would compete in the reaction.

What is the buffering range of MES?

About pH 5.5 to 6.7, centred on its pKa of about 6.1 at 25 °C.

Can I add NaCl for coupling reactions?

Yes. Many protocols use 0.1 M MES with 0.5 M NaCl. Add solid NaCl, or ask us for the ready-made version.

Does MES bind metal ions?

Only very weakly, so it is suitable for most metal-dependent enzymes and assays.

How should 0.1 M MES buffer be stored?

Store at 2–30 °C, tightly closed. Unopened bottles have a 1-year shelf life and ship at room temperature.
