Biochemazone Artificial Phlegm BZ296, also called simulated phlegm, is a sterile, ready-to-use solution that simulates the composition and pH of phlegm. It can be used directly and is supplied at pH 7.4; the pH can be customized to the project requirement.
Phlegm is a type of mucus produced in the lungs and the lower respiratory tract. Mucus and phlegm are similar, yet different: mucus is a thinner secretion from the nose and sinuses, while phlegm is thicker and is made by the throat and lungs. Both trap the particles that are breathed in, including viruses and bacteria; natural mucus and phlegm are made of water, antibodies, enzymes, proteins and salt. BZ296 gives laboratories a phlegm of constant composition for respiratory research and device testing.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein and mucin, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The stabilizer, pH and contents can be customized to the project. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only; it is not for clinical diagnosis or treatment.
