Biochemazone Artificial Mucus Matrix BZ275, also called simulated mucus matrix or synthetic mucus, is a sterile, ready-to-use solution that simulates the composition and pH of mucus. It can be used directly and is supplied at pH 7.0; the pH can be customized to the project requirement.
Mucus is a normal, slippery and stringy fluid produced by many of the lining tissues of the body. It is essential for body function: it is a protective and moisturizing layer that keeps critical organs from drying out, it traps irritants such as dust, smoke and bacteria, and natural mucus contains antibodies and bacteria-killing enzymes that help to fight infection. The body produces about 1 to 1.5 litres of mucus a day. BZ275 gives laboratories a mucus of constant composition for in vitro research on mucus barriers and mucosal delivery.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein and mucin, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The stabilizer, pH and contents can be customized to the project.
