Biochemazone Artificial Sputum Matrix BZ274, also called simulated sputum matrix or synthetic sputum matrix, is a sterile, ready-to-use solution that simulates the composition and pH of sputum. It can be used directly and is supplied at pH 7.0; the pH can be customized to the project requirement.
Sputum is not saliva: it is the thick mucus, sometimes called phlegm, that is coughed up from the lungs when they are diseased or damaged. The body produces mucus to keep the thin, delicate tissues of the respiratory tract moist, so that small particles of foreign matter are trapped and forced out; when there is an infection in the lungs, excess mucus is produced, and the body gets rid of it by coughing it up as sputum. BZ274 gives laboratories a sputum-like matrix of constant composition for respiratory research and assay work.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein and mucin, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The stabilizer, pH and contents can be customized to the project.
