Biochemazone Artificial Sputum Medium (ASM) BZ316, also called simulated sputum medium, is a sterile solution that mimics real human sputum, at pH 6.5 to 7.4. It acts as a culture medium that contains lipids, micronutrients, amino acids, mucin, proteins and free DNA, and it is used as a matrix to mimic the sputum of cystic fibrosis (CF) patients. It can be used directly; other pH values are made on request.
ASM is available in two versions. The standard version contains antibiotics/preservatives that extend the shelf life and keep the medium sterile; it is not suitable for cell and microbial cultures, because the antibiotics may inhibit the growth of some strains. The version without preservatives and antibiotics is suitable for cell and microbial cultures. Unopened, the standard version with preservatives has a 1-year shelf life and the version without preservatives a 1-month shelf life; once the bottle is opened, use it within 5 days. For an enhanced shelf life of up to 2 years, order the Powder Version Kit. Because it contains protein and mucin, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The stabilizer, pH and contents can be customized to the project. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only; it is not for clinical diagnosis or treatment.
