Product Overview
Biochemazone Synthetic Cystic Fibrosis Sputum Medium BZ578 reproduces the nutrient environment of sputum from people with cystic fibrosis, for growing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other CF pathogens under realistic conditions. Two published formulations are offered.
SCFM1 is the defined medium of Palmer, Aye and Whiteley (2007): amino acids, glucose, lactate and salts at the levels measured in CF sputum, at pH 6.8. SCFM2, described by Turner et al. (2015), adds the viscous components of sputum: mucin (5 g/L), DNA (0.6 g/L), the lipid DOPC (0.1 g/L) and N-acetylglucosamine (0.3 mM). In SCFM2, P. aeruginosa gene essentiality closely matches that seen in real CF sputum.
Both media are prepared aseptically for microbiology use with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system. For simpler mucin-based sputum media see Artificial Sputum Medium BZ316.
Two formats are offered: the premixed ready-to-use medium (shelf life 1 month at 2–30 °C, unopened) and a Powder Version Kit that is reconstituted easily with the instructions provided. For a 1-year shelf life we recommend the Powder Version Kit.
