Biochemazone Artificial Breast Milk BZ255, also called simulated breast milk, is a sterile, ready-to-use simulant of human milk at pH 6.35 to 7.35. Breast milk contains high concentrations of lipids and proteins and has a pH somewhat lower than that of plasma; BZ255 simulates this composition and pH.
Many drugs present in a mother’s plasma also appear in her milk, often at higher concentrations, so the presence of a drug in breast milk is a marker for its likely presence in the breast-fed infant. BZ255 is used in in vitro research on such questions and in product testing, as a consistent replacement for donor milk. It is a milky, off-white liquid.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The pH and the contents can be customized to the project.
