Biochemazone Artificial Amniotic Fluid BZ259, also called simulated amniotic fluid, is a sterile, ready-to-use amniotic fluid simulant at pH 7.1 ± 0.2. The pH of natural amniotic fluid is typically about 7.0 to 7.5, and the standard formulation is held within that range.
Amniotic fluid is the clear, slightly yellowish liquid that surrounds the unborn baby in the amniotic sac. It cushions the baby against blows and movement, keeps the temperature constant, lets the baby move so that the bones and lungs develop properly, and prevents pressure on the umbilical cord. At first it consists of water from the mother’s body, and later largely of the baby’s urine, with nutrients, hormones and antibodies. BZ259 is used in in vitro research as a consistent stand-in for this fluid, which can otherwise only be obtained by amniocentesis.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. The pH and the contents can be customized to the project. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only; it is not for clinical diagnosis or treatment.
