Biochemazone Simulated Semen Solution BZ180, also called simulated seminal fluid or artificial semen, is a sterile, ready-to-use semen simulant at pH 7.8. Human semen is a mixture of secretions from several glands: the prostate supplies acid phosphatase, citric acid, inositol, calcium, zinc and magnesium, the seminal vesicles supply fructose, ascorbic acid and prostaglandins, and L-carnitine and neutral alpha-glucosidase come from the epididymis.
One of its main applications is to evaluate how semen influences the performance of topical therapeutic, contraceptive and prophylactic formulations. It is also used in forensic method development and device testing, where a consistent, non-human seminal fluid is needed. The odour and appearance of seminal fluid are simulated with specific odoriferous compounds together with thickeners, suspending agents, solvents, colouring agents and surfactants.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. The pH and the contents can be customized to the project. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only; it is not for clinical diagnosis or treatment.
