Biochemazone Synthetic Vernix Caseosa BZ294, also called artificial vernix caseosa, is a sterile, ready-to-use waxy gel at pH 7.00 that simulates the composition and pH of the vernix of the newborn. Vernix is the white, cheesy substance that covers and protects the skin of the fetus and is still on the skin at birth; it is made of sebum and cells shed from the skin, and consists mainly of water (80.5%), lipids (10.3%) and proteins (9.1%).
Vernix is a natural barrier cream. It works as a moisturizer, raising the hydration and water-holding capacity of the skin; its films are semi-permeable, in the range that helps barrier repair; and it has antioxidant, disinfectant and skin-cleansing functions. BZ294 gives a consistent synthetic material for in vitro research on these properties. It is not for drug or human use.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) is available on request. Because it contains protein, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The pH and the contents can be customized to the project. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only; it is not for clinical diagnosis or treatment.
