Biochemazone Artificial Zonular Interstitial Fluid BZ447, also called simulated zonular interstitial fluid, is a ready-to-use synthetic solution designed to replicate the properties of natural zonular interstitial fluid, at pH 7.2. It is the fluid around the zonular fibres, which suspend the lens of the eye. It contains water, electrolytes and other relevant compounds, which mimic the physical and chemical characteristics of the natural fluid. The pH of natural zonular interstitial fluid is about 7.0 to 7.4; the standard formulation is set at 7.2. Its viscosity and density are matched to the natural fluid, and it stays stable through the test.
Research laboratories use it to study the interaction between the zonular fibres and the surrounding ocular environment, including the structural integrity of the eye’s lens suspension system, its protective function and its possible role in drug delivery to the eye, and in controlled experiments that measure biomarkers within the zonular region. It is also used to evaluate and calibrate medical devices that interact with zonular interstitial fluid, such as intraocular lenses, zonular support devices and drug delivery systems, in research on ocular health and the biomechanics of the zonular fibres, and in training, without the need for human zonular interstitial fluid.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request.
