Biochemazone Artificial Saliva Mucin Added ASTM E2720-16/ASTM E2721-16 BZ390 is an artificial saliva with mucin at pH 7.0 developed following the official methods ASTM E2720-16 and ASTM E2721-16. Both methods assess decontamination procedures for materials and surfaces contaminated with human pathogenic viruses – E2720 for air-permeable materials challenged with aerosols, E2721 for surfaces challenged with droplets. The virus is suspended in artificial saliva so that it is deposited in a matrix like the one a cough or sneeze carries.
The formulation mimics the mineral content and pH of human saliva and contains mucin, the glycoprotein that gives saliva its viscosity and lubricating properties and that protects a virus on a surface. BZ390 is used to prepare the challenge suspension in decontamination studies of respirators, masks, fabrics and hard surfaces, and it is also of interest for dental, drug-delivery and pharmaceutical studies that need a mucin-containing saliva.
BZ390 is offered in two versions, which you select on this page at the same price. The not-stabilized version comes in two parts – the saliva solution and pre-weighed mucin powder – which are mixed before use and refrigerated after mixing; unopened it has a 6-month shelf life. Frequently Asked Questions
Which version should I select?
Select the not-stabilized two-part version when a preservative could affect the virus or the cells of your assay; mix it before use and refrigerate it afterwards. Select the pre-mixed stabilized version for convenience and storage at room temperature. Both are the same price.
Why is mucin part of the formulation?
Mucin makes the suspension behave like real saliva when it dries on a surface and gives the virus the protection it would have in a real droplet, so a decontamination method is tested under realistic conditions.
