Biochemazone Simulated Saliva for Lateral Flow Assays BZ500 is a ready-to-use, sterile synthetic formulation engineered to mimic the physical and biochemical properties of human saliva, for the development, calibration and quality control of saliva-based diagnostic tests and lateral flow assays. It replicates the viscosity, electrolyte balance and protein profile of saliva, at a default pH of 6.8 within the range of 6.2 to 7.4.
The standard formulation contains the electrolytes sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, phosphates and bicarbonate, urea and uric acid, and mucin; glucose and amylase are optional. BZ500 is used to evaluate saliva-based antigen, antibody and viral RNA detection devices, for quality control and reproducibility testing of rapid tests, to develop standardized protocols, and to verify saliva-responsive sensors and readers at the point of care. It is a consistent and safe alternative to biological samples.
BZ500 contains a non-toxic preservative as standard, so it is supplied stabilized, with a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version is available on request. Because it contains mucin, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time.
