Biochemazone Simulated Olfactory Mucus BZ436, also called artificial olfactory mucus, is a ready-to-use synthetic solution designed to replicate the properties of natural olfactory mucus, at pH 6.8. It contains water, electrolytes, proteins and enzymes, the components of the mucus of the nasal cavity, which mimic the physical and chemical characteristics of the natural fluid. The pH of natural olfactory mucus is about 6.0 to 7.4; the standard formulation is set at 6.8. Its viscosity and density are matched to the natural fluid, and it stays stable through the test.
Research laboratories use it to study olfactory function and pathology, and in tests that assess biomarkers and simulate conditions of the olfactory system, which gives insight into olfactory health and disease mechanisms. It is also used to test and calibrate medical devices that interact with olfactory mucus, such as diagnostic tools and nasal sensors, in the development of new medical technologies and procedures related to olfactory health, and in training, without the need for natural olfactory mucus.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains proteins and enzymes, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The formulation, minerals, organic content and pH can be customized.
