Biochemazone Artificial Sinus Mucus BZ412, also called simulated sinus mucus, is a ready-to-use synthetic solution designed to replicate the properties of natural sinus mucus, at pH 6.0. It contains water, electrolytes, proteins and mucin, which mimic the physical and chemical characteristics of the natural fluid. The pH of natural sinus mucus is about 5.5 to 6.5; the standard formulation is set at 6.0. Its viscosity and density are matched to the natural fluid, and it stays stable through the test.
It is used in research, testing and product development to simulate the conditions of the human respiratory system: in studies of drug delivery, of the behaviour of pathogens and of nasal sprays. Research laboratories use it to study the interaction between mucus and the nasal environment, including respiratory health and sinus function, and in tests that measure biomarkers in nasal secretions. It is also used to test and calibrate medical devices that interact with mucus, such as respiratory diagnostics, in the development of new medical technologies and procedures, and in training, without the need for human mucus.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein and mucin, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The formulation, minerals, organic content and pH can be customized.
