Product Overview
Biochemazone Simulated Lung Fluid with DPPC Surfactant BZ577 is a Gamble’s-type simulated lung fluid that also contains dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), the main phospholipid of human lung surfactant. The formulation follows the surfactant-containing lung fluid described in the review of simulated biological fluids by Marques, Loebenberg and Almukainzi (2011), in which 0.02% w/v DPPC is added to the electrolyte base.
The surfactant lowers surface tension and improves wetting of hydrophobic particles, so inhaled drugs and airborne particles dissolve in a way that is closer to the deep lung than in a plain salt solution. The fluid is buffered to pH 7.4 (range 7.2–7.6), the pH of the lung lining fluid, and prepared with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system.
BZ577 is used for dissolution testing of dry-powder inhaler and nebulised formulations, for solubility of inhaled drug particles, and for particle-toxicology studies of dusts, fibres and nanomaterials. For a surfactant-free version see Gamble’s Solution BZ284 or Simulated Lung Fluid BZ179.
Key Features & Benefits
✅ Contains DPPC Surfactant – 0.02% w/v dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine, the main lung-surfactant phospholipid
✅ pH 7.4 (Range 7.2–7.6) – Buffered to the pH of the lung lining fluid
✅ Gamble’s-Type Electrolyte Base – Physiological salts of the interstitial lung fluid
✅ Better Particle Wetting – Lower surface tension than surfactant-free lung fluids
✅ Published Basis – Follows the surfactant lung fluid in Marques et al. (2011)
✅ ISO 3696 Grade Water – Prepared using high-purity laboratory water
✅ Ready-to-Use – No lipid dispersion step for the user
✅ Made in Canada – Manufactured under ISO 9001 / GMP quality systems
