Biochemazone Artificial Salivary Interstitial Fluid BZ452, also called simulated salivary interstitial fluid, is a ready-to-use synthetic solution designed to replicate the properties of natural salivary interstitial fluid, at pH 6.8. It contains water, electrolytes, enzymes and biomolecules, which mimic the physical and chemical characteristics of the natural fluid. The pH of natural salivary interstitial fluid is about 6.0 to 7.5; the standard formulation is set at 6.8. Its viscosity and density are matched to the natural fluid, and it stays stable through the test.
Research laboratories use it to study the interactions between salivary interstitial fluid and oral tissues, including nutrient transport, enzyme activity and tissue hydration, and in assays that measure salivary biomarkers. It is also used to test and calibrate medical and dental devices that interact with salivary fluids, such as diagnostic tools for oral health assessment and equipment that measures salivary gland function and enzyme activity, in research on oral biology and salivary gland function, and in training in dentistry and oral pathology, without the need for actual salivary fluids.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains enzymes, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The formulation, minerals, organic content and pH can be customized.
