Product Overview
Biochemazone Synthetic Human Urine (SHU) Medium BZ600 is a defined, urine-like growth medium for studying urinary tract infection (UTI) bacteria under conditions close to those in the bladder. The composite SHU formulation was proposed by Ipe, Horton and Ulett (2016) and evaluated by Ipe and Ulett (2016), Journal of Microbiological Methods, who grew a panel of Gram-negative and Gram-positive uropathogens in it.
Two versions are offered. SHU supports Gram-negative organisms such as E. coli, Klebsiella and Proteus. SHU + 0.2% yeast extract follows the published finding that Gram-positive uropathogens such as Enterococcus and Staphylococcus saprophyticus grow reliably only with this supplement. Both have a pH of about 6.5 (range 6.0–7.0) and are supplied sterile-filtered and ready to inoculate.
A Powder Version Kit is also available for making 100 mL, 200 mL, 500 mL or 1000 mL of SHU or SHU + 0.2% yeast extract. The dry powder has a 2-year shelf life unopened and is reconstituted easily with the provided instructions, making it the best choice for long-term stock and remote laboratories.
SHU complements our Artificial Urine Medium for Growing Urological Pathogens (BZ103). Each batch is prepared with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system.
