Product Overview
Biochemazone Human Peripheral Simulated Blood Plasma BZ464 is a sterile, ready-to-use, chemically defined, protein-enriched plasma simulant that mimics the electrolyte, metabolite and protein composition of normal adult human peripheral plasma. The pH is 7.35 to 7.45 and the osmolarity 280 to 300 mOsm/kg. It contains the electrolytes sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate and bicarbonate at physiological concentrations; human serum albumin and select globulins, with no animal-derived protein; glucose, lactate, urea, creatinine and key amino acids at fasting levels; and trace elements such as iron, zinc and copper, with buffering agents.
The formulation is benchmarked against reference ranges for healthy adult plasma. It has been validated in cell culture with PBMCs, macrophage activation assays and primary cell maintenance, and the preservative-free version is used in antifungal susceptibility studies and bacterial growth assays where native plasma conditions are wanted; validation reports can be shared on request. BZ464 is used for drug–plasma protein interaction and pharmacokinetic studies, biomaterial and implant compatibility, evaluation of medical devices such as stents and catheters, tissue engineering, dissolution testing, and corrosion and biodegradation studies of materials.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. For cell culture and microbiology, order the preservative-free version or the Powder Version Kit, which is prepared on site with sterile water. Shake the bottle well before use. For assays that need closer biological mimicry, such as T-cell stimulation or antibody production, supplementing with 5–10% pooled human serum or heat-inactivated FBS is recommended. Each lot is supplied with a Certificate of Analysis. This simulated fluid is for scientific research and in vitro use only; it is not for clinical diagnosis or treatment. For the general plasma simulant see Artificial Plasma Fluid (BZ273); for a protein-free one see Protein Free Plasma Substitute (BZ437).
How BZ464 compares with a protein-free plasma-like medium (Gibco HPLM, A4899101)
| Feature | BZ464 – Human Peripheral Simulated Blood Plasma | Gibco HPLM |
|---|
| Protein source | Contains human serum albumin (recombinant/derived), mimicking the protein-bound fraction of plasma | Protein-free |
| Metabolites | Includes urea, creatinine, lactate and uric acid in the physiological range | Focused on essential nutrients; lacks waste metabolites |
| Buffer system | HCO₃⁻/CO₂ system with physiological buffering | HEPES/CO₂ |
| Application scope | Immune cell assays, microbial studies, biocompatibility of devices | Primarily cell culture that needs near-physiological metabolite support |
| Customization | Available on request | Fixed formulation |

Frequently Asked Questions
Which version should I order for cell culture or microbiology?
The preservative-free version, or the Powder Version Kit prepared on site with sterile water. The standard stabilized version contains a preservative and suits materials, device and analytical work.
Does BZ464 vary from batch to batch?
Each batch is made under ISO-certified conditions with validated consistency, and a Certificate of Analysis with pH, osmolarity and protein content is supplied for each lot.
How should it be stored?
Store it at 2–30 °C; because it contains protein, 2–8 °C is best for prolonged storage. It is shipped at room temperature. Unopened, the stabilized solution has a 1-year shelf life; a preservative-free version with a 6-month shelf life and a dried Powder Version Kit with a 2-year shelf life are available on request.
