Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between EBSS and HBSS?
EBSS has much more bicarbonate (about 26 mM) and is designed for a 5% CO2 incubator. HBSS has less bicarbonate and is better for work in room air.
Can I use EBSS to induce autophagy?
Yes. EBSS has no amino acids or serum, so incubating cells in it is a widely used starvation method to trigger autophagy.
Why does the pH rise when the bottle is open?
Bicarbonate loses CO2 to room air, which makes the solution more alkaline. Keep it closed and equilibrate in 5% CO2 before use.
Does EBSS contain phenol red?
Yes. Phenol red shows the pH by colour. It is a weak oestrogen mimic, so ask us for the phenol-red-free version for hormone-sensitive cells.
How should EBSS be stored?
Store at 2–30 °C, tightly closed. Unopened bottles have a 1-year shelf life and ship at room temperature.
