Biochemazone Synthetic Sheep Defibrinated Blood BZ533 is a sterile, ready-to-use, laboratory-grade synthetic blood at pH 7.2 to 7.4 that replicates the physical, chemical and rheological properties of sheep blood without animal-derived components. It is defibrinated, so it does not clot and keeps consistent flow properties. It is a red, opaque liquid – a buffered aqueous solution with proteins and salts – that is UV treated and sterile-filtered (0.22 µm), cell-free, pathogen-free and non-toxic.
It is used for the calibration and validation of blood-based diagnostic devices, hemodynamic and perfusion experiments and in vitro blood assay development; for evaluating catheters, pumps and microfluidic devices under simulated blood conditions; and as a safe substitute for teaching blood handling, laboratory techniques and perfusion systems. It removes the biosafety and ethical concerns that come with animal-derived blood.
It is supplied stabilized and has a 1-year shelf life unopened; a preservative-free version (6-month shelf life) and a dried Powder Version Kit are available on request. Because it contains protein, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. The hematocrit level, viscosity and ionic composition can be adjusted, and tracers, dyes or markers can be included for analytical studies.
