Product Overview
Biochemazone Artificial Saliva for Mouthwash & Oral Rinse Testing BZ721 is a ready-to-use neutral artificial saliva (pH 6.8) developed as the oral-environment storage and ageing medium for mouthwash, oral-rinse and dental-material testing. It is built on the Fusayama-Meyer type electrolyte base used in dental research – potassium chloride, sodium chloride, calcium chloride, sodium dihydrogen phosphate and urea in purified water – buffered to the resting-saliva pH of 6.8 rather than the acidified pH used for alloy corrosion tests, so that specimens are held under physiological oral conditions between rinse exposures.
It is supplied in two formulations: Mucin-free (clear electrolyte saliva for standard storage, immersion and thermocycling protocols) and With mucin (porcine gastric mucin added to form a salivary pellicle on specimen surfaces, for stain-uptake and discoloration studies where pellicle-mediated staining matters). Both are prepared with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system and are standardised for pH and composition so that colour-difference (ΔE) results are comparable across test series.
As an artificial saliva for mouthwash testing, BZ721 is intended for the development and evaluation of mouthwashes and oral rinses – colour stability (ΔE / CIELAB, CIEDE2000) of resin composites, resin-based restoratives, denture-base and veneering resins after rinse immersion, surface roughness and microhardness changes, stain-uptake and discoloration models, and as the control / storage medium at 37 °C between daily rinse exposures. It is also suitable as the saliva phase in thermocycling and pH-cycling set-ups and for general simulation of the oral environment in product R&D.
Key Features & Benefits
✅ pH 6.8 – Physiological Resting Saliva – Neutral oral environment for storage between rinse exposures (not the acidified pH 4.9–5.0 corrosion-test saliva)
✅ Fusayama-Meyer Type Electrolyte Base – KCl, NaCl, CaCl₂, NaH₂PO₄ and urea – the dental-research reference composition
✅ Two Formulations – Mucin-free (standard protocols) or With mucin (pellicle-forming, for staining and discoloration studies)
✅ Designed for ΔE / Colour-Stability Work – A clear, particle-free artificial saliva for mouthwash testing that does not itself stain or cloud specimens
✅ ISO 3696 Grade Water – Prepared using high-purity laboratory water standards
✅ Ready-to-Use & Reproducible – No preparation; consistent batch-to-batch composition for multi-week immersion series
✅ Made in Canada – Manufactured under ISO 9001 / GMP quality systems
Applications
🧪 Mouthwash & Oral-Rinse Development
• Colour stability of resin composites and restoratives after rinse immersion (ΔE, CIELAB / CIEDE2000)
• Storage and control medium at 37 °C between daily rinse exposures
• Comparison of alcohol-based, chlorhexidine, essential-oil, whitening and fluoride rinses
🦷 Dental Materials Testing
• Discoloration, gloss and surface-roughness changes of composites, ceramics, acrylics and denture resins
• Microhardness and sorption / solubility studies in a simulated oral environment
• Saliva phase for thermocycling (e.g., 5–55 °C) and pH-cycling models
🧫 Stain-Uptake & Pellicle Studies
• Mucin formulation for pellicle-mediated staining with coffee, tea, red wine and chromogenic rinses
• Pre-conditioning of specimens before staining challenges
• Evaluation of stain-removal or anti-discoloration rinse claims
🔬 R&D, QC and Education
• Formulation screening and claim-support testing for oral-care products
• Method development and inter-laboratory comparison
• Teaching and demonstration of oral-environment simulation
Typical Properties
- Appearance: Mucin-free: clear, colourless solution; With mucin: slightly opalescent, colourless to faintly off-white
• pH: 6.8 ± 0.2 at 25 °C (typical resting whole-saliva range 6.2–7.6)
• Base Composition: Fusayama-Meyer type: potassium chloride, sodium chloride, calcium chloride dihydrate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate and urea in purified water, buffered to pH 6.8
• Mucin Formulation: Base composition plus porcine gastric mucin (pellicle-forming); protein-containing
• Water Grade: ISO 3696 purified water
• Format: Ready-to-use liquid; non-sterile (sterile-filtered mucin-free version on request)
Storage & Stability
- Storage Temperature: 2–30 °C, protected from light; transport at room temperature
• Shelf Life: 1 year (unopened bottle)
• Mucin-containing formulation: protein-containing – best kept at 2–8 °C for prolonged storage; 2–30 °C is fine for short-term use
• After opening: Use within the test series; discard used immersion medium and replace with fresh solution as the protocol requires
Customization Options
- pH adjustment (e.g., 6.2, 7.0, 7.4) or acidified Fusayama-Meyer version (pH 4.9–5.0) for corrosion-type challenges
• Mucin concentration, α-amylase or fluoride addition
• Stimulated-saliva (higher bicarbonate) variant
• Sterile-filtered version, custom pack sizes and bulk / OEM supply
