Biochemazone Artificial Saliva Mucin Added BZ389 is a ready-to-use, sterile synthetic saliva at pH 6.8 with mucin. Mucins are the glycoproteins that give saliva its slippery, coating character; they lubricate the mouth, bind to surfaces and interact with drugs, particles and sensors. A saliva without mucin behaves like a salt solution, while BZ389 adds the protein that makes it behave like saliva.
BZ389 is used by diagnostic companies for testing biosensor devices, and by biomedical, dental and pharmaceutical laboratories as a matrix for quality-control preparations. Typical uses are adhesion and lubrication studies, mucoadhesive dosage forms, swab and collection-device testing, protein fouling of sensors, and assays whose result depends on the viscosity or protein content of the sample.
It is supplied not stabilized and preservative-free, with a 6-month shelf life unopened; a stabilized version is available on request and has a 1-year shelf life. The pH, the mucin level and the pack size can be customized. Because it contains mucin, keep it at 2–8 °C if it is to be stored for a long time. Why add mucin to artificial saliva?
Mucin gives saliva its viscosity and its ability to coat surfaces. Tests of adhesion, lubrication, sensor fouling and mucoadhesion need it to be present.
How should BZ389 be stored?
Store it at 2–30 °C; for prolonged storage, 2–8 °C is best for the mucin. It is shipped at room temperature. Unopened, the not-stabilized solution has a 6-month shelf life.
