Product Overview

Biochemazone 5X TBE Buffer BZ209 is a five-times concentrated Tris-borate-EDTA buffer for agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of DNA. Diluted 1:10 to the common 0.5X working strength, it is used both to cast the gel and as the tank running buffer.

TBE holds its pH well during long or high-voltage runs and gives sharp, well-resolved bands for small DNA fragments (below about 1 kb). The 5X strength is less prone to precipitation than 10X TBE, so it is convenient to keep on the bench. EDTA chelates divalent ions and protects DNA from nucleases during the run.

Borate inhibits many enzymes, so use TAE buffer (BZ208) when DNA will be recovered from the gel for cloning. Each batch is prepared with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system.

Key Features & Benefits

✅ 5X Concentrate – Dilute 1:10 for 0.5X or 1:5 for 1X
✅ Less Precipitation – 5X stays in solution better than 10X TBE
✅ Sharp Small-Fragment Bands – Ideal for DNA below about 1 kb and for PAGE
✅ High Buffering Capacity – Stable pH during long runs
✅ Contains EDTA – Protects nucleic acids from nucleases
✅ Gel & Tank Buffer – Use the same dilution to cast and run
✅ ISO 3696 Grade Water – Prepared using high-purity laboratory water
✅ Made in Canada – Manufactured under ISO 9001 / GMP quality systems

Frequently asked questions

How do I dilute 5X TBE?

For the common 0.5X running strength, mix 1 part BZ209 with 9 parts high-purity water. For 1X, mix 1 part with 4 parts water. Use the same dilution for the gel and the tank.

Why choose 5X TBE instead of 10X?

5X TBE is less likely to precipitate during storage than 10X TBE, so it is easier to keep ready on the bench. Both give the same working buffer after dilution.

Is TBE suitable for gel extraction?

TBE works well for analysis, but borate can inhibit enzymes used after gel extraction. For DNA recovery and cloning, use TAE (BZ208).

What is the pH of the TBE buffer?

About pH 8.3 at working strength, the standard value for Tris-borate-EDTA running buffer.

How should 5X TBE be stored?

Store at 2–30 °C, tightly closed. Unopened bottles have a 1-year shelf life and ship at room temperature.
