Biochemazone Artificial Urine Medium for Growing Urological Pathogens BZ103 is a sterile, ready-to-use synthetic medium at pH 6.5 that closely mimics the composition of human urine and supports the growth of urinary tract pathogens. It contains urea, creatinine and uric acid, the electrolytes of urine, organic acids, phosphate buffers, vitamins and trace elements, a small amount of carbohydrate, and amino acids and peptides.
BZ103 is used to grow and study urological pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Enterococcus faecalis, to assess antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents, to study biofilm formation under conditions like those of the urinary tract, and for crystal-formation studies. The medium is colourless to light yellow; the colour can be adjusted with a food-grade dye on request.
BZ103 is supplied not stabilized – it contains no preservative, because a preservative would hold back the organisms – with a 6-month shelf life unopened. The Artificial Urine Medium – Powder Version Kit has a 2-year shelf life and is reconstituted before the experiment. For corrosion and device testing, where growth is not wanted, see Artificial Urine Stabilized (BZ104). The pH and contents can be customized. This medium is intended for research and product testing, not for in vivo or medical use.
