Product Overview
Biochemazone Synthetic Blackwater and Faecal Sludge Simulant BZ595 are safe, reproducible substitutes for toilet wastewater and faecal sludge, for developing and testing sanitation technologies. Real blackwater and sludge vary widely and carry pathogens, which makes them hard to use in product development and in laboratories without biosafety facilities.
Synthetic blackwater combines faecal simulant, urine simulant, toilet paper and flush water at realistic ratios, giving a dilute, high-organic wastewater. The faecal sludge simulant is a thick, high-solids material representing the contents of pits, septic tanks and container toilets. Both are based on published recipes (see the review of synthetic human faeces and faecal sludge, Penn et al. 2018) and have a pH of about 7.0 (range 6.5–8.0).
Typical uses are pre-testing of non-sewered sanitation systems and small treatment units (the context of ISO 30500), dewatering and drying trials, and teaching. Each batch is prepared with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system.
