Biochemazone Protein-Adjusted Wear-Test Lubricant BZ635 is ready-to-use diluted calf serum for wear testing of hip and knee replacements. Joint simulators and pin-on-disc machines must run in a protein-containing lubricant, because proteins strongly affect wear of polyethylene and metal and ceramic bearings.
Each grade is diluted with buffered saline to the protein concentration given in the relevant standard: ISO 14242-1 for hip simulators, ISO 14243 for knee simulators and ASTM F732 for pin-on-disc tests. The measured protein content of every batch is stated on the certificate, along with its pH of about 7.4 (range 7.2–7.6). An antimicrobial agent and a chelating agent can be added, as the standards allow, to limit bacterial growth and calcium phosphate deposits.
Buying lubricant ready-diluted saves time and removes a source of lab-to-lab variation. Confirm the protein level your edition of each standard requires. The serum is of bovine origin.
