Product Overview
Biochemazone McDougall’s Artificial Saliva BZ668 is the bicarbonate–phosphate buffer that imitates the saliva of sheep and cattle. Described by McDougall (1948), it is the standard buffer for mixing with rumen fluid in in-vitro fermentation, gas-production and digestibility studies of feeds for cattle, sheep and goats.
The buffer contains sodium bicarbonate and disodium phosphate with small amounts of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium salts. As supplied it has a pH of about 8.2–8.5; after saturation with carbon dioxide and mixing with rumen fluid, it holds the incubation at about pH 6.8, as saliva does in the living rumen.
Gas the buffer with CO₂ and warm it to 39 °C before use, and add reducing agent, resazurin or trace minerals if your method requires them. Check the recipe and gassing steps in your method. Each batch is prepared with ISO 3696 compliant high-purity water under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system.
