Product Overview
Biochemazone Artificial Meibum BZ654 is a lipid blend that models the secretion of the meibomian glands, which forms the outer lipid layer of the tear film and slows evaporation. It is used to study tear-film stability, lipid deposits on contact lenses, lens-care solution cleaning and lipid-containing eye drops.
The blend combines the main lipid classes reported for human meibum: wax esters and cholesteryl esters as the major part, with smaller amounts of triglycerides, free fatty acids, free cholesterol and polar lipids. It is a soft, waxy, yellowish solid at room temperature that melts close to eye-surface temperature. As a non-aqueous lipid mixture it has no pH; the aqueous tear fluid it is used with is normally at pH about 7.4. Some components, such as cholesterol and phospholipids, may be of animal origin (for example wool grease or egg); the sources are stated on the certificate.
Published meibum compositions differ between studies; check the lipid ratios against your model, and we can make blends to your own recipe. Made under Biochemazone’s ISO 9001 / GMP quality system.
