Product Overview
Biochemazone Doppler Blood-Mimicking Fluid BZ587 is an ultrasound test fluid for flow phantoms and Doppler test objects. It reproduces the acoustic and flow properties of blood that matter to a Doppler system – speed of sound, density, viscosity, attenuation and backscatter – so that measured velocities, spectra and colour-flow images behave as they would in a patient.
The fluid follows the approach of Ramnarine et al. (1998): a glycerol and dextran base with surfactant and suspended micron-sized scattering particles, formulated to the blood-mimicking fluid properties given in IEC 61685 (Ultrasonics – Flow measurement systems – Flow test object): speed of sound about 1570 m/s, density about 1050 kg/m³ and viscosity about 4 mPa·s. The pH is near neutral, about 7.0 (range 6.5–7.5).
BZ587 is used in quality assurance of Doppler ultrasound scanners, in the development and calibration of flow phantoms, and in research and teaching of vascular ultrasound. It contains no blood and is safe to circulate in pumps and tubing.
Key Features & Benefits
✅ Blood-Like Acoustics – Speed of sound about 1570 m/s; density about 1050 kg/m³
✅ Blood-Like Viscosity – About 4 mPa·s for realistic flow profiles
✅ Doppler Backscatter – Suspended scattering particles give a strong, stable Doppler signal
✅ Formulated to IEC 61685 Targets – Properties of the blood-mimicking fluid for flow test objects
✅ pH About 7.0 – Near-neutral, gentle on pumps and tubing
✅ Non-Biological – No blood, no infection risk
✅ Degassed Before Filling – Fewer bubbles and artefacts
✅ Made in Canada – Manufactured under ISO 9001 / GMP quality systems

Usage Areas
- Hospital medical-physics and clinical engineering departments
- Ultrasound system manufacturers
- Phantom and test-object makers
- Universities and biomedical-engineering laboratories
- Sonography training centres
How to Use
- Invert the bottle gently several times to resuspend the scattering particles; do not shake hard.
- Fill the flow circuit slowly to avoid trapping air.
- Run the pump for a few minutes and remove any bubbles before measuring.
- Keep the fluid circulating or re-mix before each session, because particles settle over time.
